In the name of God Amen I John Talcoat of the towne of Coelchestre in the countie of Essex pewterer being in pfitt memorie (thanks be unto God) do make & ordeine this my last will & Testament in mannr & forme following. Imp'mis I bequeath my soule into the hands of God that made me & in the bloode of his son my Savior Jesus Christe hath redeemed me, & by the grace of his holly spiritt hath washed me fro' all my sins, & sanctified me unto eternall life & my bodie to be buried wthin the churchyarde of St Peters parish in Coelchester Item I give & bequeath five pownds of good & lawfull mony to be distributed the day before my buriall unto the poore inhabiting within the towne of Coelchr namely xxs. unto the poore of St Peters parish, & four pownds unto the poor of the rest of the parishes within the towne to evry parish a part at the discretion of myn executors. ( gap ) Item I give & bequeath unto my wife Marie Talcoat the third parte of all my goods movable excepting mony Item. I give unto her the howse or tenement wherein I now dwell, togeathr with the howses or tenements wherein John Padnoll, & Richard Lambe now dwell adioning unto my saide dwelling howse, with all the shopps, sollars, sellers yards, gardens or backsyds therunto apptaining, to have & to holde unto her owne use & behoofe during the terme of her naturall life, & at the end theirof to leave the saide houses in meet repairatione unto my son John Talcoat according to my bequest hearaftr specified by me John Talcoat Item. I give unto her a yearly rent of fortie shillings out of the leases of those grownds which I holde called the sewerall to be paid unto her by my son Robert Talcoat at two severall times in the yeer at the feast of St Michell the Archangel, & the Anu'ciation of o' Ladie by even portions, during the terme of the saide leases, & if she happon to dye before the terme of those leases shall expire, then my son Robert to be discharged & acquyted of the saide payment ( gap ) Item I give unto her that my howse or tenement situated in the parish of the holly Trinite wherein the widdowe ffroste now dwelleth, & my howse or tenement situated in the same parish neer unto Sheergate wherin ( gap ) now dwelleth, as also that my howse or tenem't situated in the parish of St Gyles standing next unto Dobbels wall wherein ( gap ) now dwelleth togeathr with the yards gardens or backsyds severally appertaining unto the said howses or teneme'ts to have & to holde unto h'r propp'r use and behoof during the terme of her naturall lyfe, & at the end thereof to leave the saide howses or tenemets unto such of my childre' unto whom I have bequeathed the same. It' I give & bequeath unto h'r ten garnish of letting vessell imatiatly after my death, & Ten pownds of good and lawfull mony to be paid her by myn executors wthin one month after the day of my death. provyded, that if my said wyfe shall demande or claime the Third of those lands mony or howses which I have otherwise bequeathed then my forsaide gift of bequeath unto her to be voide It' I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Talcoat all the leases of the forsaide sewerall, as well of all the lande & grounds as also of all the howses & barnes standing theruppon in such mannr, & with such conditions as I myself, have and do holde the same in forme of Sr Thomas Hennage or any other, with this conditio' that he shall duly pay unto my wyfe his mothr, xxxxs. a yeer during the term of those leases, or her life naturall as is before specified. It' I give unto him that parte of Dowe howse field which lyith next unto the north bridge in Coelch, as it is now divided with pale & quicksett in the tenure & occupatio of ( gap ) duitsh man & by him imployed in gardeninge
Item I give & bequeath unto my son Thomas Talcoat that other part or piec of Dowe howse field wherin the Tainters nowe stande, lying next unto my land, conteining about 3 akers be it more or lesse, as it also lyeth now inclosed, Togeathr with the howse or Tenement which I have builded theruppo.
It' I give & Bequeath unto my son John Talcoat & to his heyers of his body lawfully begotten that my howse or tenement wherein I now dwell, situated in St Peters parish Together with those howses & tenements wherin John Padnoll, & Richard Lambe now dwell, adioining unto my now dwelling howse, with all the shopps, sollers, sellers, gardens or backsides thereunto app'teining to have & to hold unto himself & his heyers after him after the decease or naturall death of my wife his mother & not before. And if it happen my said son John Talcoat, to dye without issue of his body lawfully begotten then my will is that the eldest son then lyving of my son Robert Talcoat & his heyers after him being lawfully begotten shall inioy & possesse as his or their propp'r inheritance all those foresaid howses & tenements , as is beforebequeathed unto my son John. provyded, notwithstanding the premises, that it shall be lawfull for my son John Talcoat if he will to sell unto Robert Talcoat & to none other all or any of those foresaid howses or tenements bequeathed unto him.
It' I give & bequeath unto myn daughtr Marie Marshall & to her eldest son after her or yf she hath no son then lyving to her eldest daughtr that my howse or tenement with the yards and backsydes thearunto belonging situated in the parish of St Buttolphs, in which howse James ffearfill glover now dwelleth.
It' I give unto my daughtr Eme Adler, & to her eldest childe after her that my howse or tenement situated in the parish of the holly Trinitee, whearin the widdowe ffrost nowe dwelleth with the yarde or backsyde thereunto belonging, after the death of my wyfe, hr mother, & not before. ( gap ) Item I give unto her fourtie pownds of good & lawfull mony to be paied unto her by myn executors within two moneths after the day of my death.
Ite' I give unto my daught' Grace Talcoat & to her eldest childe after her that my howse or teneme't in the parish of the holly Trinitee wherein ( gap ) Growse now dwelleth, neer unto Sheergate togeathr with the yarde or backsyde therunto belonging, after the death of my wyfe her mother, & not before. ( gap ) Ite' I give unto her fiftie pownds of good & lawfull mony to be paied unto her by myn executors within six moneths after the day of my death.
Ite' I give & bequeath unto my daughtr Joane Talcoat foure skore pownds of good & lawfull mony, to be paied unto her by myn executors w'thin six moneths after the day of my death. Ite' I give unto my grandchildren John & Mary Bernard, five pownds a piss to be paied unto them at the age of twentie yeers, & the same in the meane time to be reseived for them in ye hands of myn executors. Ite' I give & bequeath unto my grandchilde John Talcoat the son of my son John Talcoat late of Braintree the sum of fortie pownds of good & lawfull mony to be paied unto himself by myn executors at the age of one & twentie years ( if he lyve so long) & the said fourtie pownds in the meantime to be reseived for him in the hands of myn executors.
Ite' I give unto my grandchilde, An Bernarde that my howse or tenement situated in the parish of St Gyles adioining next unto Debells wall wherin ( gap ) now dwelleth, after the decease of my wyfe Marie Talcoat & not before, the same to enter uppo' & possesse as her owne at the age of eighteen years, & the rent of the same in the meantime to be reserved for her in the hands of myn executors.
Ite' my will & bequest is, that the thirde of all my goods movable (mony excepted) being deducted to the use of my wyfe, & all my debts & legacies paied, the remainder of all my saide goods shall be equally and indifferently shared & devyded between my two Executors. Lastly, I appointe & ordaine my two sons Robert & Thomas Talcoat executors of this my will & Testament. In witness whearof I have hearunto sett my hand & seale the xxiiiith of Septemb'r an' Doi' 1606.
