Burrington, North Devon
Holy Trinity Church on postcards, photos, painting

Burrington church on a postcard c1922.
Dave Tylcoat.

Note how small the Yew tree is in front of the church. The postmark is indistinct, the date written by the writer is 30/7/22?, the stamps are KGV d Green, first issued in 1912, Gracie (see below) was married in 1927 so no longer Webber after that date so I think 1922 is correct.  The postmark is Chulmleigh and the card was sent to Gracie Webber, c/o Mr P Skinner Esq., Hills View, Hollacombe (where Gracie may have been in service).  The writer 'B' states that "Mother is gone to the funeral" [sic] - which could date it more precisely, if there is anybody out there that has a Webber family history. Dave Tylcoat.

Thanks to Roger Dunn of Dolton who added the following: Mary Grace Webber married Percy Skinner from Hollacombe. It was from "B" who might well have been her sister Bessie. "Mother" would then refer to their step-mother Lucy (nee Copp) as their mother Julia (nee Nethercott) was dead by then.

J. Salmon, colour postcard [# 5-02-11-38].  Burrington church in the 19th century.  Dave Tylcoat.

Postcard, unknown publisher, possibly early 1900's.  Dave Tylcoat.
Both crosses on the roof ends are intact.
Two identifiable stones at the front (they are now separated) are:
Robert Frayne, son of John & Elizabeth Frayne, died 14 Nov 1900, age 30;
Elizabeth Frayne, wife of John Frayne, died 13 Dec 1903.
You would expect John to be buried next to his wife so I assume he was still alive when this photo was taken.
A search of the I.G.I brings up one likely John Frayne, born North Molton 1850, died 1916 (no location).
My guess of early 1900's looks OK, if same John Frayne then this picture dates between 1903 and 1916.
